Copyright & Permissions Policy

Last updated: 16 December, 2025

Liberation Theology Archives (also referred to as LT Archives) is a digital archival, research, and publishing platform operated as a trading name of Our Own Wells Publishing Limited, a UK‑based Private Limited Company (Company Number 15516252).

This policy sets out how copyright, permissions, attribution, and reuse are handled across the Liberation Theology Archives website (https://www.ltarchives.com) and any associated platforms operated by Our Own Wells Publishing Limited.

1. Purpose and Ethos

Liberation Theology Archives exists to preserve, contextualise, and make accessible historical texts, documents, images, testimonies, and scholarly materials related to global liberationist Christian movements and social struggles, particularly from the mid‑twentieth century onwards.

Many of the materials with which LT Archives works are:

  • Out of print or difficult to access
  • Dispersed across private and institutional collections
  • At risk of deterioration or loss
  • Poorly represented in contemporary digital scholarship

LT Archives understands itself as a custodial and interpretive archive, not a replacement for original publishers, rights‑holders, or institutional repositories. Wherever possible, our work is undertaken with permission, attribution, and in active dialogue with those who hold legal or moral rights in the materials.

2. Ownership and Rights Status of Materials

Materials appearing on LT Archives fall into several distinct categories. Each page or item is presented in good faith and with clear attribution.

a) Copyrighted Materials Used with Permission

Some materials are reproduced, translated, digitised, or excerpted with the explicit permission of the relevant copyright holder(s), publisher(s), archive(s), or estate(s). Where this is the case, such permission is acknowledged clearly on the relevant page.

Permission may be:

  • Limited in scope (e.g. non‑commercial use, fixed term, online display only)
  • Restricted to certain formats (e.g. excerpts rather than full texts)
  • Subject to conditions imposed by the rights‑holder

All such conditions are respected by LT Archives.

b) Copyrighted Materials Used Under Fair Dealing / Fair Use

Certain materials are reproduced in excerpted or partial form under applicable copyright exceptions, including UK fair dealing provisions for:

  • Non‑commercial research and private study
  • Criticism, review, and scholarly commentary
  • Illustration for instruction

In these cases:

  • Only the portion necessary for the stated scholarly or archival purpose is used
  • Full bibliographic and source attribution is provided
  • Use does not seek to substitute for the original work or undermine its market

Where materials are accessed from third‑party repositories (e.g. institutional archives or publicly accessible digital libraries), LT Archives does not claim ownership over those materials.

c) Orphan or Rights‑Unclear Works

Some historical materials hosted or referenced by LT Archives are believed, after reasonable investigation, to be orphan works or to have unclear or untraceable rights‑holders.

In such cases:

  • LT Archives acts in good faith
  • Materials are presented for preservation, research, and educational purposes only
  • Clear attribution is given to known authors, publishers, or archival sources

If a rights‑holder later comes forward, LT Archives will engage promptly and constructively to resolve the matter.

d) Public Domain Materials

Materials that are believed to be in the public domain are marked as such wherever possible. LT Archives does not assert copyright over public domain works, though it may assert rights over:

  • Original translations
  • Scholarly commentary
  • Editorial framing
  • Original digital scans or photographs (where applicable)

3. Translations and Derivative Works

LT Archives publishes original translations, transcriptions, and editorial adaptations of historical materials.

Unless otherwise stated:

  • Translations are original works produced by LT Archives or its contributors
  • Copyright in the translation itself is held by Our Own Wells Publishing Limited
  • Underlying copyright in the original text remains with the original rights‑holder

Translations are produced either:

  • With permission from the original rights‑holder or publisher, or
  • In good faith under applicable copyright exceptions, where legally permissible

Reuse of translations is subject to the conditions outlined in Section 6 below.

4. Images, Photographs, and Visual Materials

Images used on LT Archives may include:

  • Archival photographs reproduced with permission
  • Images used under fair dealing / fair use for contextual or scholarly purposes
  • Public domain or Creative Commons‑licensed images
  • Original photographs and scans produced by LT Archives

Each image is accompanied, where practicable, by:

  • Source information
  • Rights status
  • Attribution or credit line

LT Archives does not claim ownership over images it does not own.

5. Attribution and Scholarly Integrity

LT Archives is committed to high standards of scholarly attribution. This includes:

  • Clear citation of authors, editors, translators, publishers, and archives
  • Preservation of original titles, publication dates, and contextual information
  • Transparency about editorial or translational interventions

If an error in attribution or rights information is identified, LT Archives welcomes correction and will act promptly to amend the record.

6. Reuse of LT Archives Content

a) What You May Do

Unless otherwise stated, users may:

  • Read and cite materials for personal study, research, and teaching
  • Quote short excerpts with appropriate attribution
  • Link to LT Archives pages

b) What You May Not Do Without Permission

Without prior written permission, users may not:

  • Reproduce LT Archives translations in full
  • Redistribute paywalled or subscriber‑only content
  • Systematically scrape or download site content
  • Use materials for commercial purposes

c) Requesting Permission

Requests to reuse LT Archives original proprietary content (translations, commentary, original scans) should be directed via the Contact page or the form at the end of this page. LT Archives cannot grant permission for materials where third‑party rights apply.

7. Takedown and Rights‑Holder Requests

LT Archives operates a good‑faith takedown policy.

If you believe material on this site infringes your rights, please contact us with:

  • Identification of the material in question (URL)
